The Story Behind Lilac City Vegan Soap

Spokane’s nickname, “Lilac City,” has a long and meaningful history. In 1906, J.J. Browne planted the first lilac bushes in the area. These plants grew well and inspired others to plant more. A few years later, in 1912, a large lilac planting took place at Manito Park, where the bushes thrived in the local climate.

By the 1930s, Spokane was filled with lilacs each spring. People loved the blooms so much that the city entered a full “lilac craze.” This excitement led to the start of the Spokane Lilac Festival in 1938. Today, the festival continues and features more than 100 types of lilacs.
